The Danish NCD Alliance has advocated for political attention through meetings with Minister of Development Søren Pind and Minister of Trade and Development Mogens Jensen. The outcome of these meetings were promising in form of political support and concrete collaboration. The Danish NCD Alliance has also advocated through • Commenting development strategies while in progress • Opinion pieces (kronikker) in major newspapers • Opinion piece in “Development”. Journal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs • Organising two multi stakeholder meetings in Denmark • Regular meetings with civil service officers from Ministry of Foreign Affairs • Close collaboration with University of Copenhagen and University of Aarhus • Participating in the Health Network (Sundhedsnetværket) and as board member and chair of CISU (2010-2015) • Regular updates on the Danish NCD Alliances website and facebook At the global level the Danish NCD Alliance has worked closely together with the global NCD Alliance and • Participated in the NGO hearing before the UN High-level meetings on NCDs in 2011 and 2014 • Participated as official NGO representative in the UN High-level Meetings on NCDs in 2011 and 2014 and presented paper at the meeting in 2014 • Appointed to WHO Global Coordination Mechanism and presented a paper at its meeting in 2015 • Organised meetings with the Danish UN Ambassadors in New York in 2011 and 2014 • Organised workshop hosted by the Danish UN Ambassador in New York about a civil society funding mechanism together with the global NCD Alliance in 2014 Resources and organisation The activities have been managed by Director of Development Susanne Volqvartz. From March 2016 she has had administrative support from student assistant Morten Bach in 8 to 15 hours a week. Eleven professional people from the Danish NCD Alliances member associations, see appendix, have supported capacity development in East Africa. The steering committee consisting of Charlotte Rulffs Klausen the Danish Diabetes Association and Una Hallenberg the Danish Cancer Society, have been overseeing and guiding the project since 2010. CEO Leif Vestergaard Petersen the Danish Cancer Society, Chair Frede Olesen, from 2015 Dorthe Crüger the Danish Cancer Society and CEO Henrik Nedergaard and chair Truels Schultz the Danish Diabetes Association have endorsed the strategy at annual meetings since 2013. Since 2015 Professor Frede Olesen has served as president for the Danish NCD Alliance and offered special expertize on leadership and research. Strengths and weaknesses of DNCDA The major strength is the commitment to share the professional expertise in the Danish associations with partners in East Africa and the Danish association’s long standing experience from representing patients and the population in working with government and political leaders. The existence of Danida’s Civil Society Fund has been an essential prerequisite for translating these strengths into support to capacity development in East Africa. The purpose of the Danish associations working for NCD health is to improve the conditions for the Danish population. The weakness this create for the Danish NCD Alliance is that the capacity development support to East African NCD Alliances, has been established as a standalone initiative, managed and coordinated by 4 Danish NCD Alliance STRATEGY 2017–2020
